4. Hard heartedness vs Compassion

Human values

We now come to C4, the tongue and the sense of taste.  Our words have a profound impact on others.

The brain of a young child is very sensitive. If a young child is exposed to violence and hardheartedness then that will make a profound impression for good or ill on the childs personality.  Here we discover an important thing.  If we ourselves neglect one of the 35 aspects of our spiritual life or even have one run out of control and dominate our personality can that result in harm to others?  In this way do we encounter hard heartedness through our own ignorence or negligence of our own natures?

Out of sheer self-protection, our tendency is to become hard ourselves: we take a hard line, develop hard feelings, and in the process become hard-hearted and socially isolated.

Compassion
The Dalai Lamas message on compassion

warm, soft hearted, humane, loving, kind, warm, understanding, sensitive, gentle

"Recently I met a group of scientists in America who said that the rate of mental illness in their country was quite high-around twelve percent of the population. It became clear during our discussion that the main cause of depression was not a lack of material necessities but a deprivation of the affection of the others."

"I believe that at every level of society - familial, tribal, national and international - the key to a happier and more successful world is the growth of compassion. We do not need to become religious, nor do we need to believe in an ideology. All that is necessary is for each of us to develop our good human qualities."

and when you come across a hard hearted person?  I like the Dali Lamas advice - move away from them!
